San Diego may enact a future policy mandating the retrofitting of existing residential gas appliances by 2035. 

This would impact all homeowners forcing them to not only purchase new hot water heaters, stoves and dryers, but would make it unfeasible for most homeowners to offset the utility costs with solar, subjecting many homeowners on fixed incomes to face potentially unaffordable electric bills. 

The initiative is designed to reduce carbon emissions, yet it is unknown how much natural gas will be used to produce the electricity at the utility level to compensate for the ban on natural gas at the residential level.
